SGA Santa Uh-oh. My requestee for sga_santa requested a rarepair which I couldn't resist. And it's ending up with a totally different rarepair in the final scene. Shit. Any volunteers for a beta? I've been chopping at this fic rather ruthlessly trying to solve quite a few problems. Current Mood: anxious |

wishlist 2009 I've been pretty conflicted about posting my wishlist; on one hand its something of a fandom/lj/lj-clones tradition, and although many people try to grant wishes, its not a required or expected part of making the list. On the other hand, im really ashamed that I screwed up with Holiday wishes last year. I don't even remember who I promised to send stuff too last year (can't look back at my emails because there was a computer mishap) I could explain about all our medical and financial and family crisises but I don't want to focus on the negative and I doubt you'd enjoy reading it either. If I promised you something last year, please let me know, and I'll try to make it right this year. ( Read more... ) |

Don't eat while reading this. Eeesh. By the way, hearkening back to my earlier post--this doesn't spoil anything, since you can see on the Yuletide list of requested fandoms that no one asked for it--I did not get assigned to write for Richard Adams's The Plague Dogs. I decided, when I accidentally included it in the list, that rather than redo my list I'd just go read the book once and for all, even before the assignments came out, so I got it from the library. I got through Ulysses easier than this. This is...guys, I have written some interesting metaphors myself in my time, some of them admittedly more purple than should be seen outside of crackfic, but this takes them all: ...Rowf's rump slid suddenly forward as smoothly as a turd from a healthy anus...I can't even facepalm. It's too squicky. Current Mood: aggravatedCurrent Music: Treasure Planet DVD |

Also, being by myself, I got to watch anything I wanted on tv, not football. Anime yaoi, ho! I had to work part of the holiday, so I just counted the time I did have off as a good thing, and took it easy rather than make plans with others. I did make time to make a yummy dinner for myself from scratch: Chicken with sun-dried tomatoes in dijon-riesling-cream sauce Sesame noodles Spicy peanut butter soup Tart green salad with proscuitto and asiago and warm balsamic dressing Warm butterscotch-maple pudding I love mixing cuisines. Thanksgiving Thanksgiving.
I was just informed that mom and her roommate were expecting me to do the Thanksgiving turkey. Along with pumpkin pie (crust from scratch) and my cheesecake.
Whut-?
This is going to be one of those weeks, isn't it?

Masterpiece photoshoot, part 2 My housemates and I host a masquerade every year and I took advantage of all the snazzily dressed people to do some more photos in the "Masterpiece" series. We didn't get fancy with costumes and props like last time, but there's something to be said for just going with things as-is (and it certainly didn't hurt that everyone was dolled up in fancy clothes to start with!). On to the gallery!

500,000 animals being slaughtered right now. My mom has been talking about this for weeks: 500,000 animals to be ritually slaughtered? On Tuesday, November 24th the Gadimai animal sacrifice festival will take place in southern Nepal. It is said that 500,000 animals including buffaloes, chickens, goats, pigs, rats, and birds will be tortured and slaughtered during this Hindu festival. Write to the Nepalese Embassy: info@nepalembassyusa.org In India, the ritual slaughter of animals in such rites as the Agnicayana has long been replaced with effigies. There is no religious reason for this throwback. Despite the detailed instructions in Leviticus, Judaism no longer sacrifices the fatted calf. Like that. Current Mood: blah |

What no one will tell you about college. I'm tutoring high school students, prepping them for the SAT. I think what they need as much as good SAT scores are some good college strategies. Share yours here. So here it is: What no one will tell you about college (until you get there). 1 - Want to increase your scores 5% without doing anything? ( Sit in the same seat every day )2 - Talk to your professor outside of class. ( Disagree with your prof? Good! Take it to her/him at the end of class. )3 - Bored? Ask a question. ( Every time I found myself zoning out during a class I would raise my hand )4 - Avoid clock-watching. ( Avoid the clock-watching tick by sitting where you can't see the clock. )5 - High school is for taking the classes you hate. College is for taking the classes you love. ( Don't be a masochist -- if you can avoid that hated math class by taking a much more interesting astronomy class, do it. )6 - Know thyself. Work with your habits rather than against them. ( If you suck at mornings, don't take that 8:30am Japanese class. )7 - Avoid schizophrenia and be efficient: Take related classes at the same time. ( You can use your readings from Indian history as sources for your Indian lit class and vice versa. )8 - If the class you want is booked, show up anyway, books in hand, and participate vigorously. ( The professor would rather have you as an extra student than the disinterested slackers in the back. )9 - Give yourself flexibility: Plan, plan, plan. ( When you're not sure of your major, take classes that apply to all three of your most likely majors first. ) 10 - The one I learned too late: Build a relationship with professors who are top in their field by taking more than one class with them. ( If they're a bit of a name, their opinion carries weight. ) Current Mood: happyCurrent Music: Skid Row |

Reason number 211 why I love these high school students. Reason number 211 why I love my high school tutoring students:
A student wrote his SAT essay. He detailed how, scientifically speaking, the planet doesn't need humans.

Daily life: Trying to figure out ways to improve my wordage "Look, I do know this: stories matter. "Sometimes they come to me in the middle of the night, I wake up and I know there was once a person with a name, a history, a life -- and sometimes they died a hundred years ago and sometimes they haven't been born yet, but they're so real, they're right there, like I can touch them. I write them, when I can, and grieve them often, in ways I've learned to be smart enough not to talk about. "At times that bothers me, the silence I feel obligated to that comes with storytelling. It bothers me when I write, which is one manner of inhabiting a character, and it bothers me when I act, which is another. But I've learned to live with it because stories, and the people they are about, are, in the telling, more important than me. "I'm just a translator, a medium, a canvass and a liar. Their stories matter so much that in the telling of them, all I can wish is to disappear. "And I love them so much, the people I tell into being. "Which means that when it comes to the business of awards my gut says, honor them. Not me. Not writers. Characters. Stories. Honor them." -- RM( Background to my entries )( Writing: Man, oh, man, I'm offline for a month, and the entire e-publishing world changes )( Simplicity and Writing: My time online; plus, the Prison City stuff I found )( Writing: For your amusement, the Nautical Telegraph Code )( Writing: The Lambda Literary Awards discussions in the blogosphere )( Simplicity: Getting back on track )( Writing: Squee! Home life: TMJ, tennis elbow, and dry eye - the unholy trio "In the midst of winter, I finally realized that deep within me there lay an invincible summer." --Albert Camus. I'm posting separately this entry some medical problems I've been having recently. (Don't worry, they aren't life-threatening, just painful and annoying.) I figure that people who are interested in reading my Daily Life entries may not want to wade through tons of medical stuff, and vice versa. I have a stress-related illness. )( Pillows. )( Tiny food. )( Less talking, more progress )( Sleeping and posture )( Desk posture )( Now my glasses have decided to misbehave (but wow, once they behave, life'll be great) )( Yet another bodily complaint ) |
